White Squirrel

White Squirrels: White and gray squirrels gambol on the lawn of Brevard’s City Hall. Kathryn Wilson created this sculpture from North Carolina marble and limestone. The Brevard white squirrels are not albinos, but variants on the Eastern Gray Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), with a predominantly white coat and distinctive gray or brown markings on the shoulder and head. Although about a dozen other cities in the United States have this variant, Brevard is thought to have the largest colony of white squirrels (about 1,000) in the country.
